Development Strategy for POB Material Science and Engineering in years 2022-2026

The main goal of CB POB Material Science and Engineering is to expand the capacity and increase the scientific potential, scientific level, and research/apparatus facilities of teams conducting research in the areas of POB_TM.

Specific goals

Scientific and research activity

  • Raising the level and increasing research and publication activity.
  • Adding new topics related to materials technologies and joining interdisciplinary projects to research topics.
  • Development of selected research areas: nanomaterials, additive technologies, in particular 3D printing, functional materials, and biomaterials.
  • Increasing the number of patented inventions with high application potential.
  • Development of research infrastructure and optimisation of its use.
  • Development of research potential, including supporting the development of young scientific staff and acquiring the best scientists from Poland and the world.
  • Intensification of cooperation/contacts of POB_TM with competent scientific councils of disciplines and doctoral schools.
  • Supporting initiatives related to cooperation with industry and intensifying knowledge transfer – science – industry.
  • Support for scientific cooperation with foreign countries and scientific exchanges of experience and thought in the international environment.
  • Integration of the PW environment, from different faculties, around selected research areas (scientific and informational) – networking of competencies within the POB_TM.

Education

  • Popularisation of the subject of POB_TM among students and doctoral students and in society.
  • Educating young scientific staff, engaging students in POB projects – building competences.
  • Acquiring the most talented candidates for studies and doctoral schools, also from abroad, and developing talent management mechanisms.

Promotion

  • Popularisation of scientific achievements outside PW - informing stakeholders about the most important achievements of the university's activities in the field of materials technologies.

Main actions to achieve the goals

Actions providing financial support

  • The Visiting Researcher competition. Conducting a competition for the position of researcher for scientists from abroad with extensive achievements to conduct activities related to the preparation of applications in international projects. One-year contract with the possibility of extension.
  • Organisation of competitions for research grants, addressed to experienced and young, promising scientists, conducive to initiating high-risk projects with a high degree of originality.
  • Organisation of competitions for "small" grants in the area of POB_TM for students, student research groups, and doctoral students.
  • Financial support for the purchase of (unique) research equipment needed for work as part of POB_TM.
  • Financing promotional activities conducted in the society.
  • Supporting the activities of consolidated inter-faculty research centres with the most innovative and future-oriented topics, e.g. 3D printing and nanomaterials.

Activities supporting the exchange of scientific ideas and the promotion of activities of POB_TM

  • Scientific seminars on POB_TM delivered by PW employees, scientists from other scientific institutions, including from abroad, and industry representatives, organised jointly with the competent RND and doctoral schools.
  • A website where an up-to-date list of activities and achievements of POB_TM will be available.

Organisational support activities

  • Support for faculties in launching new programmes of study and specialisations in the fields related to POB_TM.
  • Exchange of scientific ideas and critical analysis of ideas and current directions in scientific research between POB_TM and competent RNDs and scientific societies.

Expected outcomes

Scientific and research activity

  • Increase in the number of publications in prestigious journals and the number of citations.
  • Increasing the number of patents (including international patents).
  • Increasing the involvement of young researchers in research.
  • Providing PW teams working in the area of POB_TM with new (unique) equipment and increasing the use of PW research equipment by various scientific teams.
  • Increasing the recognition and reputation of the university in the field of materials technologies.

Scientific cooperation

  • Increase the number of projects with industry and externally funded, including EU projects.
  • Integration of the academic community operating in the field of POB_TM and increasing the "critical research mass", also within the framework of the created inter-faculty research centres.
  • Increasing the number of scientific contacts and agreements with foreign scientific institutions with knowledge, experience, and/or equipment complementary to PW.
  • Increasing the international exchange of scientific staff within the topics of POB_TM, both the number of outgoing and incoming scientists.

Education

  • Increasing the number of candidates for PW studies and Doctoral Schools within the topics of POB_TM.
  • Raising the awareness of students and doctoral students with the possibility of implementing research projects, diploma and doctoral theses within the POB_TM.
