A summary of the activity of POB Materials Technologies

What has happened in the last three years?

POB Materials Technologies

POB Materials Technologies, which aims at disseminating scientific excellence and conducting research at the highest world level by PW research teams, selected 58 projects from all applications submitted under 3 competitions for research grants.

A project headed by Katarzyna Jabłczyńska, PhD, from the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology, aimed to produce a hybrid nonwoven material for air filtration, characterised by both high filtration efficiency and strong biocidal properties in the presence of light from the visible range. Starting the project, the research team assumed the creation of a structure of polypropylene fibres with a diameter of several micrometres and a surface coated with appropriately designed photocatalyst nanoparticles, which would lead to the neutralisation of bacteria and other microorganisms deposited in the filter structure. A research team led by Professor Jerzy Antonowicz from the Faculty of Physics of the Warsaw University of Technology, conducted research on optically induced melting of palladium using the method of ultra-fast, time-resolved X-ray diffraction using pulses of radiation emitted by X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). During the measurements conducted in the European XFEL, a thin layer of metal was excited by a femtosecond optical pulse, which caused it to melt locally. The delayed sampling X-ray pulse diffracted on the structure of the exposed area of the layer, and the spatial distribution of scattered radiation was recorded in the form of a two-dimensional diffractogram. Strategic activities

POB TM conducted the Visiting Researcher competition, which aimed to increase the research potential of the Warsaw University of Technology by employing an outstanding specialist, scientifically related to issues connected to the thematic scope of POB. The initiative resulted in the employment of an outstanding professor from France, Patrick Joseph Masset, and the implementation of the project entitled Powder EngineeRing for EnergetiC Technologies.

In 2022, POB organised the first edition of the Mat-LAB competition, which aimed to financially support the creation of a new and the development of the current research infrastructure. Due to the great interest, the next edition of the competition was announced in 2023.

Keeping students in mind, POB TM organised the DEMO Materials competition, which aimed to support the students’ scientific development, increase their scientific activity and enable them to develop scientifically in the field of materials technologies by developing and manufacturing a demonstrator, i.e. a product in the field of materials technologies, manufactured independently by the applicants, in the process of its design and manufacture.

Additionally, POB TM remembered to promote its activities. For several years, a catalogue of POB TM teams was created, among other things, which contained a presentation of the subject of certain research groups operating within this area. Also, scientific seminars were organised, and the activities of POB TM were presented during the XXV Seminar of the Polish Society of Materials Science, which enabled the activities of POB TM to go beyond the university.
