Development Strategy for POB High Energy Physics and Experimental Techniques for years 2022-2026

POB HEP aims to conduct scientific research on the frontiers of human cognition in the fields of high-energy physics, plasma physics, and quantum physics, including quantum computers, and to create unique solutions in the field of fast digital and low-latency electronics, detection techniques, sensing, as well as software and computing resources for applications in Big Science projects. These activities are to considerably increase PW’s and other cooperating universities’ recognition in the international arena, which will translate into increased attractiveness of studies and work at PW, also for people from outside Poland (PostDoc, competitions).

The specific goals of POB HEP are as follows:

  • Supporting the establishment and development of cooperation between teams and PW in Big Science class projects, including participation in large experimental scientific cooperation conducted in international research laboratories. Cooperation should be based on synergies between research and the development of specialised technical solutions.
  • Development of groups conducting theoretical research in areas related to POB HEP, with a strong emphasis on the international aspect.
  • Development of research on IT solutions (software and computing power) to support POB HEP activities.
  • Taking on the role of a leader at PW in activities increasing the internationalisation of the university, including recruitment of foreign students for first-, second-, and third-cycle degree studies, development of international staff, and internationalisation of the teaching process.
  • Taking advantage of conducting exciting scientific research in large international collaborations to create young research teams at PW, including by engaging students and doctoral students in scientific research and developing the courses offered, including inter-faculty ones.
  • Initiation and development of coordination of teams and areas of quantum technology on a national scale and stabilisation of international contacts, including start-ups.

The goals of POB HEP are achieved through the following actions:

  • Supporting and developing the participation of PW groups in international Big Science and other undertakings related to high-energy physics and experimental techniques by:
    • joining large, international research collaborations by formally signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU);
    • active development and financial support for participation in projects in which groups from PW are already official members (MoU signed earlier);
    • creating infrastructure, substantive and organisational support for undertaking new tasks in Big Science projects;
    • integration of teams from many PW faculties to create synergies in the implementation of tasks for the needs of Big Science;
    • Active application for funding in the national, European, and international arenas in order to secure funds for the implementation of the above-mentioned tasks.
  • Taking a leading role in increasing the internationalisation of PW:
    • implementation of scientific research almost exclusively in an international environment;
    • employing new, young scientific staff using extensive international contacts resulting from being part of the high-energy physics community;
    • increasing the recruitment of international students, especially third-cycle degree students, for the needs of research conducted in Big Science projects and others in the field;
    • increasing the internationalisation of the courses offered by creating new courses, programmes, and elements of the programme of English-medium studies and those conducted abroad (foreign student internships, individual studies, implementation of diploma theses in international cooperation).

The expected outcomes of POB HEP activities will be:

  • Documenting the conduct of scientific research by publishing papers in journals from the first decile of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education list in related fields: at least thirty papers per year.
  • Documenting the conduct of scientific research through speeches at major international scientific conferences (100 and more participants): at least twenty speeches per year.
  • Application for funding of scientific research from national and foreign funds: at least twenty applications during the project, which have been accepted from the formal point of view.
  • Intensification of trips abroad and joining, and thus cooperation in large international research cooperation and projects financed from EU sources (long-term trips - at least one month: ten per year).
  • Impact on increasing student activity: internships and involvement in multi-annual and international projects. Including:
    • at least fifty PW students per year engaged in international internships;
    • at least thirty students per year engaged in projects funded by POB HEP;
    • at least ten doctoral students per year engaged in projects financed by POB HEP.
  • Internationalisation of the workforce:
    • support for the employment of post-docs in the field of POB HEP (at least five people during the project).
  • Creation of financial infrastructure and funds, supporting applications for international projects; creating hardware and software infrastructure by supporting a specialised design and implementation laboratory for the development of new research initiatives, hardware and software integration for new projects and collaborations, strengthening resources for the implementation of algorithms, including the so-called quantum ones, simulation for the phenomena of particle physics and non-condensed matter, as well as computing and simulation in the area of big data and models of particle and quantum physics.
  • Creating strategic infrastructural support (substantive and organisational) for undertaking new research and projects in Big Science projects.

Additionally:

In 2023, in connection with the plans of the Polish Government for the development of nuclear energy in Poland and in order to satisfy the huge interest displayed by industrial partners, due to the need for intensive development of scientific and teaching potential related to this subject, POB HEP focused on goals related to nuclear energy.
