A summary of the activity of POB Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

What has happened in the last three years?

POB Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

The Scientific Council of POB Artificial Intelligence and Robotics has announced three editions of competitions for research grants and selected 28 projects which received funding from all applications.

As part of one of the selected projects, PW researchers worked to improve indoor location services. The solution is increasingly used in the care of people with dementia or the navigation of automated robots, among other things. To check the effects of the developed methods, Marcin Luckner, PhD, and his research team conducted tests on measurement data collected in the public space of three PW buildings: the Main Building, the Building of Physics, and the building of the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science.  More about the project >>>

A research team led by Tomasz Leś, PhD, from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology worked on computer systems that are to assist in medical diagnostics. Thanks to artificial intelligence and the analysis of numerous photos, the resulting tools and their final application will facilitate the automatic analysis of research results, which will be conducted in just a few minutes. Additionally, these tools will facilitate joint analysis of the results obtained by various imaging methods – they will be able to conduct diagnostics at different levels, without focusing only on one organ or disease entity. Professor Krzysztof Perlicki from the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology PW with the team focused on creating a mobile application to support the therapy of alcohol addiction. Although there are already applications on the market fulfilling a similar function, the PW’s solution assumes interaction with another person, and not just integration only with the patient. As a result of the research conducted as part of the project "Look and learn: Acquiring skills by a robot-companion on the basis of task demonstration", Maksym Figat from the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology of the Warsaw University of Technology, the then-doctoral student, and today a PhD-holder, defended his doctoral thesis, for which he received the main prize in the ABB competition.

Strategic activities

As part of the undertaken activities, POB jointly with the Centre for Advanced Materials and Technologies PW, the Łukasiewicz Research Network, ARP, and FundingBox submitted a positive application for the establishment of the European Digital Innovation Hub. From 25 Polish candidates chosen in the national pre-selection, the European Commission selected 11 consortia that obtained funding.

POB also started cooperation with the Defence and Security Research Centre of the Warsaw University of Technology on the preparation of an application for the DIANA (Defence Innovation Accelerator in the North Atlantic) NATO programme. The case is ongoing.
